Are business cards dead?

Are business cards dead? This topic is always interesting, depending on who you talk to, this question yields some interesting answers. But i'll take a stab on this and offer my opinion.
The physical card still has a place in a networking environment where you don't want to stop the conversation to pull out phones, or other electronic devices to add contacts. The action of doing so creates awkard moments and just simply isn't efficient for on-the-spot info gathering. I usually take their card, while simultaneously keeping the conversation going. I'll keep the card and addthem to my contacts later.
What's most important to me is the face-to-face interaction of the moment because you never know when you'll get that face-to-face time again with that person.
Also i think handing somebody a business card carries a certain aura of professionalism and preparedness, quickly without the need to do a on-the-spot sales pitch. Cards are the beginning of the new found relationship. To grow and make use of the relationship the next generation of communication comes into play, this is where the social media networks of the world are useful to maintain that contact.
